new line - beginning

It was a fairly warm spring day, a bit unusually hot for this time of year actually. Daniel pulled into the lot of his complex, pleased he managed to get a spot that was actually close to his door for a change.  He grabbed his backpack out of the backseat of his yellow Beetle and hit the alarm button. Another long day of classes and he was glad to be home. He didn't have to work either so it meant an evening of relaxing or catching up on stuff around the apartment at the very least.

He'd been here about three weeks now, but with how busy  he'd been with school and work he'd barely unpacked. All he had were the essentials out at the moment. Dishes, sheets, things to cook and take a shower and he'd assembled his desk and bed. The rest of the small one bedroom apartment was filled with boxes shoved in corners or stacked on each other.

Blowing his light brown fringe out of his eyes, he unlocked his door and began to walk inside. He nearly tripped after taking a step as his calico, Arwen came to greet him. "Shit!" He put out his hands on the doorframe to stop his fall, but the action and his shout startled the cat and she ran out the front door. "Great," he muttered as he tossed his bag in the door and then turned to chase after the feline. "Arwen, come on girl. Come back here."

a first meeting

It was only her second night on the job, but already Arianna felt accustomed to the place. The faces may be a bit different as well as the names, but the feel was the same. The dark walls, dimly lit private booths, the same lonely hunger in the eyes of the patrons she served. She went about her job with half a smile, enough to be pleasant, but not inviting. She pushed her long black hair back from her face as she took another round of orders from the crowded table in the corner. Walking back to the bar to fill it, she could swear she felt a pair of eyes on her. She didn't look around. Given the type of environment she was in, it was to be expected.

As she waited for her drinks, the man sitting at the bar to her left ordered two Irish Car Bombs. "One for me and one for you," he said and placed one of the drinks in front of her.

Typical, she thought and placed a hand on her hip as she turned towards him. Arianna looked him over once before deciding to accept the drink. She'd watched him out of the corner of her eye, so she knew it was safe. She lifted the shot and nodded at him in thanks before dropping it into the beer glass and tossing the drink back. She was thankful that her drinks were ready by the time she finished. She didn't want to linger with this guy and make him think he stood some sort of chance with her. Another nod and a tiny smirk and she took off to deliver her drinks.

Making her way about the room, she looked to see if anyone else looked like they needed a drink. Her eyes settled on a man with short dark hair and rather intense eyes. Arianna was drawn towards him though she wasn't sure if it was to get his drink order or something else. She put a bit of extra sway in her hips as she approached where he sat.

Corrigan James Donnelly/Lucas Parker

Corrigan got up once again at the crack of dawn. Early classes at the college followed by a closing shift at the cafe had him feeling completely exhausted. He jumped in the shower in an attempt to wake himself up, dressed quickly and ran out the door, his shaggy brown locks still damp and falling in his eyes. He had nearly forgotten that he agreed to switch shifts to open this morning. His mum was flying in and he had to be off in time to meet her at his apartment. She said she had business in town, but was likely just checking up on her dear boy, making sure he was eating, dressing himself and staying out of trouble like he claimed in all his letters and phone calls. She was a complete mother hen and he sometimes was annoyed by all the fussing, but she was all he had and he loved her dearly.

So off he went walking quickly through the city streets, dodging the odd slow commuter on his way to the little cafe. It was grey and rainy and Cor pulled his coat up over his head, doing his best to stay dry. At least he didn't have to go to class tonight in this mess, he reminded himself as he pushed through the glass door and took off his coat.

Justin was already there and greeted him with a confused smile. "Cor, didn't you close last night? What are you doing here so early?"

"Changed shifts with Rachelle. Mum's flying in," he replied as he walked into the back to put up his coat and grab his apron. "Brew me a few shots, would ya man?"

Justin made him a rather strong latte and Cor drank it quickly, thankful for the large dose of caffeine. The morning rush began just as he was finishing up and he set about taking people's orders as they came to the counter. He just set the last drink down on the counter and turned to the next in line. "What can I get started for ya?"

Layne walked down the length of the bar again, making a sweep of empty and nearly empty bottles and glassed, wiping up with a dirty rag as she went. It was getting towards the end of the night and there were only a few patrons left. She had a laugh with the regulars, doing yet another shot with T.J. and grinning. "This guarantees you nothing," she smirked. "And I still expect a tip." She tossed back the shot and closed her eyes as the fiery feeling of the tequila ran down her throat.

Someone put yet another Journey song on the jukebox and she reached under the bar for the switch to skip it. "Enough morose mullet rock for the evening." The next song was a bit more appealing to her and she swayed her hips slowly as she turned to check the clock. "Alright! Last call!" Her eyes scanned the bar for whomever might want another drink and perhaps who might be a source of after hours entertainment. It'd been a few days and she was feeling antsy.
